Horticulture Building

Welcome to the 2022 South Dakota State Fair Horticulture Exhibition.  What a challenging year for gardening!  Wind, Rain and Drought!!  This year at the Horticulture Show we kick-off our speaker series with a presentation and discussion on how to grow vegetables and flowers in hot dry conditions and the opposite, wet and sultry!  We will follow with presentations on growing Hostas, Good vs Bad Garden Bugs, what we can expect for future weather effects on gardening and bugs and the impact of gardening on your health!  And don’t forget the trees.  What is going on with trees in South Dakota and what varieties to plant when challenged with lack of moisture?  Finally, a fascinating topic, No-Till Gardening.  Who would have thought this was possible?  Everyone wants a beautiful clean garden – right?  Why?  What if I have no space for outdoor gardening?  We think you will find our line-up of speakers and topics entertaining and thought provoking while looking to the future.  If I have too much produce, too many flowers or want to share my production with others, how best to build a following for my work?  Stop in and check us out, we want to hear from you while you and learn what you want to see at the State Fair Horticulture Show!

We are especially happy to announce that this year’s Mirror Room exhibit will be provided by the South Dakota Florists Association.  Stop by to see the design they prepare for you!  Sunday, September 4th will be South Dakota Florist’s Day and feature a booth with how to connect with florists in the state.  Saturday, September 3rd will be South Dakota Flower Grower’s Day.  Stop in and see a special exbibit prepared by Jenny Behlings, Custer, South Dakota, and recent inductee in the South Dakota Florist’s Hall of Fame, highlighting those who grow flowers in South Dakota.  The South Dakota Florist’s Association is one of the most active associations of its kind in the US!  Want to connect with the South Dakota Master Gardner’s?  Visit their booth in the Horticulture Building, marvel at the vegetables on display by South Dakota growers and ask your toughest questions learn how you can join those who know dirt and plants!!

Stop in, look around, sit down, and strike up a conversation!  We are eager to connect with you and make your day at the fair a memorable and fun one!!

The Horticulture Building is open 9 AM - 8 PM daily during the fair with daily educational programs and static exhibit displays.
