Put culinary delight with spirited competition and that brings thousands of starvin' bbq lovers to the heartland of South Dakota. Welcome to the 4th annual South Dakota State BBQ Championships, so proclaimed by Governor Mike Rounds.
Saturday, June 5th we host this prestigious Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned event. It is held in conjunction with Wheel Jam VII, located in the south campground area at the State Fairgrounds. The popularity of competition barbeques has grown at a dramatic rate nationwide, as over 300 KCBS barbeques will be held in 2009. Up to 40 cooking teams, from nine or more states, will compete for title of Grand Champion. The Grand Champion earns the right to compete at the Great American Barbecue in Kansas City, KS, the 30th Annual American Royal in Kansas City, MO, and the 21st Annual Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational in Lynchburg, TN.
The teams will also vie for over $10,000 in prize money, which is underwritten by sponsorship and entry fees. This is a judged competition but many specatators attend just to see how these cooking teams perform and they also get to taste some of the non-competition barbeque sold as 'People's Choice.' Last year roughly 2,000 people came out and we had tons of positive comments. This year we expect even more, due to word of mouth (or is that taste in mouth?) and more people seeking entertainment closer to home due to the economic impact.
Increased attendance increases sponsorship value. Now more than ever, we ask that you consider our sponsorship packages for this emerging and most exciting event. All proceeds go to the South Dakota State Fair Foundation, a 501-c-(3) non-profit organization. |
