Value Added Ag Day - Thursday, August 31

Welcome to the 18th annual Value Added Ag Center Day at the State Fair. The Value Added Agriculture  Development Center (VAADC) helps create and expand agribusinesses that process commodities that we use every day. Traditional crops & livestock are being used to make oil/meal (soybeans), grasfed beef (cattle), pasta (wheat) and biopharmeceutical products (sheep). Non-traditional agribusinesses are processing wines/spirits/beers, white sorghum flour, fleece/wool and aquaculture grown food/livestock feed. South Dakota's value added agriculture industry is showcased in the Day Sponsor Tent today.

SD Specialty Producers Association and SD Wine Growers Association are partnering with us to feature specialty crops, local foods and wines/beers/spirits. There will also be presentations on various local food topics and a cooking demo. Be sure to make time to walk through the Day Sponsor Tent and Wine Pavilion to sample products from value added businesses and learn more about the innovative products being made here in South Dakota. Stop by in the afternoon to enjoy our Ice Cream Social brought to you in cooperation with your South Dakota Dairy Producers.

Check the schedule below for event times and locations of all of our events. Come have some Seriously Twisted Fun with us on Value Added Ag Center Day.

SD Farmers Union Day - Saturday, September 2

Join us for Farmers Union Day at the South Dakota State Fair Saturday, September 2. South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) will host events throughout the day celebrating the family farmers, ranchers and rural communities from across the great state of  South Dakota that they so proudly represent.

The day will kick off at 10:30 a.m. on the Freedom Stage with the Insuring a Brighter Tomorrow scholarship presentaiton, sponsored by Farmers Union Insurance Agency. Incredible high school seniors will be awarded with scholarships totaling $25,000 to put towards their college education. Five individuals will then be presented with their Rural Dakota Pride Award. These individuals have made a lasting impact on their communities through volunteer work. SDFU believes it's these volunteers that make a community strong.

Highlighting the day of activities will be the annual Farmer's Share Luncheon (limited number of meals available) located in the tent near the Freedom Stage from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In comparison to the retail price of the meal, $10, attendees will pay just $0.30 for a meal that showcases the farmer's share on retail food dollars.

From 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on the Freedom Stage, Farmers Union will host a Farm Bill panel featuring Senator Thune, Senator Rounds, and Congresswoman Noem (invited) to hear your concerns on the new upcoming Farm Bill and other rural issues  effecting the ag community.

At 2:00 p.m. is the Farm Safety FFA Quiz Bowl Championships, where four FFA Quiz Bowl teams will compete for the championship title. This event is designed as a fun way to teach high school students about safety on the farm or ranch.

Farmers Union will be displaying their new interactive Farm Safety Trailer on Third Street in front of the Heritage Museum. The trailer will give visitors the opportunity to learn farm safety with power take offs, grain bins, down power lines and ATVs.

We are exctied for you to join in the fun of Farmers Union Day at the 2017 South Dakota State Fair!

Friday September 1, 1:30-2:30 p.m. South Dakota Farmers Union will host Ethanol: The American Fuel panel featuring Marc Rauch discussing the benefits of E-30 use in all vehicles and its impact on the agriculture industry.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety will return in the Day Sponsor Tent on Sunday, Sept.3! This year's theme focuses on two important areas - responsible driving and fire safety. With school soon starting, DPS reminds drivers, especially young drivers, to be careful: slow down, don't let electronic devices distract you and ALWAYS wear a seatbelt. This year's Fire Prevention Theme is make sure your family is safe in case of a home fire and "plan two ways out." Renew your dirver's license - two address documents required. Also see Highway Patrol safety simulators and police dog demonstrations at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. These are not your normal dogs! Tommy the turtle, the Office of Emergency Management's official mascot, will be on hand to help educate our children on how to be safe during severe weather. The goal of DPS Day is to highlight all the ways the department works to keep the public safe. Stop by and see the staff of the Department of Public Safety. Most importantly, stay safe!
